Pinehurst Parks & Recreation has managed to complete about six miles of greenway so far, and they want to extend the greenway to a total of 24 miles. And, as you hear later in the video, they would like to connect their greenway to the Southern Pines greenway system -- which, in turn, they hope will connect with the East Coast Greenway. This is a terrifically expensive undertaking for very dubious use. Who is going to walk or bicycle from Pinehurst to Southern Pines -- much less to Fayetteville, by golly! What foolishness!
But the real treat comes with Dennis Markatos-Soriano's presentation of plans for the East Coast Greenway. They want this trail to go from the Maine-Canada border to the southernmost tip of Florida. This is to be an "urban trail" to parallel the Appalachian Trail. Here's the greenway map within North Carolina.
This massive boondoggle would, as Mr. Markatos-Soriano suggests, cost billions of dollars over 20 years or so of (optimistic) construction. And his talk is the biggest pile of BS I have witnessed in years, full of bogus stats, exaggerated claims, and left-wing propaganda.
First off, Mr. Markatos-Soriano did not get the memo on Global Warming. He has not, apparently, heard how that massive scam has been debunked. He did not read -- or did not understand -- that there has been no global warming since 1998 and that the same scientists at the U.N. and East Anglia University who brought us the Global Warming myth have now predicted that the earth is entering a new age of global cooling. No, his entire talk was riddled with old talking points about greenhouse gases and global warming. And, if you accept his views, this East Coast Greenway folly would help save the planet from an imaginary doom.
Not only that, this project would take upwards of 20% of traffic off the crowded highways, would reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and would clear the air of pollution -- the old, real kind as well as the newly imagined "greenhouse gases" type of bogeyman. Hey! Not only that! But this project would also make millions of people healthy from walking and bicycling to work and school. It would help solve the health care system "crisis"!
But wait! Not only that! But he says it would help solve the unemployment crisis, too! You see, construction of hiking paths through the forest cannot be done with heavy machinery. So, it would take lots of workers using shovels and rakes -- so the employment would go up! Happy days are here again!
He quotes billions and billions of potential savings to be achieved by this project from saved fuel costs, saved time in driving, and saved healthcare costs. Many billions more in savings than the project would cost! Well then, why don't we build 12 or 20 -- oh, hell, go for it! Why don't we build 50 of these?!!? We could save the whole nation as well as the world just with greenways!
Hey, Moore County Commission and Moore County town councils: Please do not let this clown get anywhere close to a business case -- not that he'd even recognize one if he ever looked at it. He is so full of "it" that he loudly gurgles.
But, oh boy, was he was really dishing out the Green Kool-Aid! And all but one or two in the small audience were lapping it up as quickly as he could pour it out.
These folks (all 22 members of the ultra-powerful Pinehurst Greenway Wildlife Habitat Committee and the other green weenies who managed to wander in) thought -- and actually claimed -- that most people want this stuff! Never mind that many of them were older than I am, and could not walk or bicycle their way to Fayetteville or beyond -- even with Divine Assistance! I believe these poor souls have reached senility, and they easily fall prey to scammers like Mr. Markatos-Soriano or the Liberian millionaire (trying to get help in transferring lost fortunes to kind strangers in the U.S.). Both are basically the same thing, really.
Truth is that this project is not about saving the environment, saving fuel, energy independence, making millions of people healthy, or anything else this shyster says. It's about transferring more and more land to the government and taking of private property. It's about power and money, pure and simple. And the few people who appeared today to sop up the treacle are simply Useful Idiots -- no offense intended. ;-)
I probably won't be welcomed back to any of this group's meetings, but we won't worry about whose loss that will be....
